SCCE Fishing Association Contact: Bill Peterson Meets: Monthly on 2nd Wednesday at 6 - 7:30 PM (as of Nov 2023 thru Apr 2024) Location: Retzlaff Hall & Google Meet Participants: Open to all Sunshine Residents/Renters. Details: There has been lots of interest in fishing and fishing related activities here at Sunshine. I have organized a Fishing Club to address the interest in different styles of fishing in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). It is quite different than most Winter Texans are used to. With this Club platform we can share ideas, methods, and trade equipment. There are many activities and projects that are possible. Future plans could include: Working with area captains and work out deals for the club. Have guest speakers about fish and fish habitat and how our club could make a difference. We may plan a fish fry as a money maker for the club. Work with the SEPO Board in pond flora, fauna & habitat. If organized correctly and run positively this club could be a driving force in SEPO's future. Upon completion, a short version will be available on this Web site. They are also hoping to have a showing of a longer version to all interested residents at Retzlaff Hall. Sunshine Video Committee Update (12-14-18): Good afternoon! It is so exciting how Sunshine committees and residents are always busy finding ways to enhance or improve our community! With that said, The Sunshine Video committee is in the beginning stages of working on Lassey Dahlstrom’s brain child - our very own community advertisement! You may notice at events or parties that one of our volunteer video persons may be recording. If for any reason you do not want to be in the video, please let the video person know and we will certainly respect your wishes! At our planned parties, i.e. Women’s Club events, there will be an announcement about the video(s) being taken, so you can let us know if it is indeed something you prefer not to participate in. Otherwise, please feel free to share your enthusiasm!! Irene Phillips, who you may have noticed is an avid photographer, has agreed to take care of many of the planned videos. We also have others on our committee who will be assisting. Your cooperation and enjoyment of the production will be greatly appreciated, and we will have such a wonderful memory video! We would also like to invite you to submit any videos or still pictures that you think are exceptionally fun or interesting! They do not have to be recent as long as they are of good quality and, of course, of Sunshine people and/or activities. For instance, we know the cameras were out in full force at the Leslie Blassing concert/dance. The Video Committee will be gathering these videos and pictures and will then get to work on splicing, editing, etc.! The committee plan is for the end production to contain snippets of different activities and fun we have here at Sunshine; perhaps 15 to 30 seconds of different events, along with some still pictures. Stayed tuned for an announcement of when and where you will be able to view this marvelous production. But don’t hold your breath on the announcement, because this may take a few months to create. Allow up to 25 days for approval/rejection notification. Plan your project accordingly. You will be notified by the SEPO Office of your approval/rejection status by email or phone. Please note the following Form and Process changes once your request has been approved. A new generic ‘project permit’ form has been developed, which does not display any of the owners’ personal information. The SEPO Office has laminated several of these forms with different permit numbers and different street names. After a resident's ACC request has been approved, the office writes the street number and date over the laminate on the Permit form and gives it to the resident. This form is to be posted near the front door of the address on the permit, so it is clearly visible from the street curb during the entire time of the project. When the project is completed, the resident returns the laminated form to the office and the work is logged in the office as completed. The street number and date are wiped from the form, so it can be used again by another resident. Dates when Requests are reviewed by the ACC – The ACC is scheduled to meet monthly on the 1st and 15th of each month, except when the date falls on a Holiday or the Weekend. The Bird Count is a national volunteer event. We count the number of species and the number of birds of that species. Results are tabulated throughout the United States. The results are an indication of how well or poorly the bird population is doing. The Sunshine Birding and Nature Club has participated in this event for many years. BUT NOTE: This event is open to anyone in the community. We will assemble at the Gazebo on Texas Avenue at 7:30 a.m. next Saturday. We will be divided into groups with assigned areas to cover. We need bird identifiers, bird sighters, and tally keepers. No special talent is needed for the last two (2) jobs listed. We will go out on foot, in golf carts, and in cars. Bring binoculars. Again - This event is open to anyone in the community. Please join us. - For more information contact Ralph Peterson (607) 590-0606 . Sent 2023-12-22: 2024 SEPO Election Committee Announcements - Hi Everyone - I figure this week you are well into the Christmas spirit and the last thing you want to think about is 'volunteering' to work on a committee. However, this is exactly the time of year that SEPO Election Committees get into gear. If you attended the Dec 19 Special Board Meeting or have viewed the video of this meeting, you are aware that I have volunteered to be the 2024 SEPO Election Committee chairperson and the Board voted unanimously to appoint me to that position. I have already been working on some of the upfront committee tasks. I have updated the Election Committee Guidebook, thanks to a collaborated effort of both myself and your SEPO Board President, Share Nelson. It is almost ready to present to the entire Board for their approval. I'm also working on a Project Plan of all of the tasks - from the smallest of small to the largest of large - that need to be performed between now and when I turn over the tallied vote count to the Board at the Feb 20 Annual Shareholders Meeting. So the next 'large' task for me to accomplish is to fill seats (so to speak) on the committee. I currently have five volunteers, some of which can only help part-time. I'm looking for 10-15 (and possibly more) people to do a variety of tasks, the largest of them being "Stuffing the Ballot Envelopes" sometime around Jan 14-15 AND "Counting Votes" between the 1 pm and 3 pm meetings on Feb 20. If you think you might be interested at all in helping me out, give me a call to discuss. If I don't get enough volunteers in the next few days, I'm going to start cold-calling. Wouldn't you rather volunteer before hearing me beg on the phone. 😁 Thanks in advance for your consideration of this matter. Happy Holidays !!! Lights On -- Lock Up and Look Out for each other! News Notes for September 2019 Lenore J. Combs, Coordinator 956 245 1276 LJCombs44@gmail.com Dear NW-CERT Volunteers and Friends, The September schedule is posted with changes in the Library. Thank you for a huge job. I want to express my thanks for all your support during this long, hot summer. I am still working on the lights for the McGruffmobile and researching a decent flashlite for you. The Town of Combes is celebrating their National Night Out on Thursday 12 September 6p-9p at the Combes Community Park. Y’all come. Let’s show our support for the Combes PD who have patrolled our community thru thick and thin. Chief Patrick Quill and their staff have worked tirelessly to bring this opportunity to you. It is our night to “take a bite out of crime” and for the Combes Police to host all other LE and EMT agencies. So a show of support is in order! Our Neighborhood Watch will have a table (under the shady tree) along with the CERT Team and the Citizens Police Academy and many other participants. Lots of info and free stuff – yum, yum. I am requesting volunteers as usual for several NNO opportunities: All jobs have instructions. 1. Sitting at our table – any and all of you – come, take turns or stay the entire time as their will be plenty of getting together and sharing stories etc. Show off our NE and CERT Team – lead by example – you are the premier group in the area. 2. Parking – roughly – get there at 5:15 pm or so – shuffle patrons into a designated parking lot. Done by 6pm or so. 3. Also, we need a few roving Golf carts – Job: A) guide special guests (PDs FDs, EMTs, etc.) into their special area behind the Pavilion B) Safety patrol Tentative plan: Combes PD will escort you and your Golf Carts on Thursday morning - 9am to Combes PD Parking Lot – where we can charge them for that evening. Then on Friday early we will have a PD escort back to Sunshine. Don’t forget to haul your charger! 4. I need your shirt size – pronto! I have been gathering those updates and have finally got them on the Sunshine Web site. I am asking everyone to please check the document for accuracy - as there were many buy & sell transactions made over the summer. One file is sorted by Last Name. The other file is sorted by Street then #. However, they both contain the exact same data. The files can be found in the 'Residents Only' section of the Web site - (www.sunshinecountryclub.com/residents-only ). So, as most of you already know, you will need the Resident Password to access the page containing the documents. If you don't already have that password, instructions on how to obtain it are on the page I linked to above. If you see anything that needs correcting please send that information to both myself and Valerie at: sunshinecountryclubweb@gmail.com AND sepo.office@gmail.com . By sending the corrections to both of us we can keep our documents in sync easier. Thank you so much in advance for helping us maintain accurate information concerning all of the great Sunshine residents. One final quick thing. We survived a once in 500 years rain event, but let’s get on with the real reason for this email. As you may recall, Larry Keller has headed up an effort in providing unique prizes for the Good Neighbor Golf Tournament and we want to continue this tradition Once again I am assuming the Chairman position for the Good Neighbor Golf Event for the dates noted above, with Jerry Wetherbee's continued guidance, so mark your calendars. Since many of you are now “back home in the northlands”, we are again soliciting your help in continuing the practice of preparing “Gift Baskets” of items that are found locally in your area during your summer stay. We suggest selecting items which set your home area apart from others. These gift baskets will be awarded as prizes at the end of the Tournament. Based on history, the recipients of these unique gift basket prizes welcome this approach and truly appreciate our generosity. I most recently lived in Lafayette, Louisiana. So, we hope to put together a basket of “Cajun items”; seasoning, rice, Tabasco /hot sauces, Beignet mix, cook books, and local brewed beer / wine for our gift basket. Just think of items your area is famous for and start accumulating them to bring back with you. We would like the baskets to be in the $50 value range. By preparing the baskets we are also providing a showcase for various products that are in North America where Sunshine Estate residents live during the summer time. Thank you for your patience! Also, Lalo is doing some improvements to the dog park on Texas Ave and was hoping to keep the grass growing and the mud down with these changes. Have a good summer! - Tom Perrier Sent 2023-04-20: Golf Course Maintenance - All of the following information is contingent on the weather (rain, wind conditions, etc.): At noon Wednesday, April 26, we will begin aerating the greens. We will be completed Friday afternoon. The course will be playable, but the greens will be rough and you will need to skip holes that are being actively worked. Throughout the next few months, on Thursday mornings (while it’s still dark), we will be spraying turf management solution. This is purchased at Home Depot over the counter. It helps with our grass and as a side by-product helps kill mosquitos where they breed. It does not affect ornamentals, roses, flowers, shrubs, trees, fruits, citrus, and vegetables. So many residents helped with this event from Woodshop donations, handmade quilts, Dog themed baskets, to cashiers, kitchen help, set up and clean up and more. Special shout out to Wade Prater and his band Whisky Dent who donated their talents and tips to the event. Tiffany Prater who created all the posters for the the silent auction, each individualized for each item. The Harlingen community gave generously and big thanks to Sally Hardy who obtained all the South Padre boat trips. Each contribution was large and necessary for the success of our event. Many have been asked how much we raised. We raised $4,993, rounded out to $5,000. Bev McIntosh 2021-11-07: WC: Thanksgiving Dinner - REMINDER - Women's Club: Thanksgiving Dinner The Women's Club will be sponsoring a Thanksgiving Day Dinner again this year in Retzlaff Hall on Nov 25, 2021, but there will be changes from how we’ve done it in the past. Rather than the Women's Club providing the meat, stuffing, gravy etc. and residents bringing the sides, desserts etc., for everyone in the hall to share, here’s the plan for this year. Due to Covid-19, in order to social distance, we will be setting up ten (10) tables in the hall. Each table can seat 8 to 12 people. We are looking for a host to ‘sponsor’ one (1) of each of the ten (10) tables. The host signup sheet is currently on the Women's Club Committee Signup Bulletin Board in the Library. Responsibilities of the host are defined later in this e-mail. I would like to have a meeting in the library with the hosts prior to putting the residents/renters signup sheet on the WC easel in the library. Anyone not signed up as a host is also welcome to attend this meeting, ask questions and then maybe volunteer to be a host. This meeting is planned for Friday, Nov 12 at 1pm in the library. The resident/renter signup sheet will go up on Nov 15, ten (10) days prior to the Thanksgiving dinner. When this signup sheet goes up residents/renters can signup for the table they wish to sit at. The hall will open at 12:30 pm on Thanksgiving Day for pre-dinner socializing. Plan to eat at 1 pm. Host Responsibilities - Each host will be responsible for meeting with the residents/renters who signed up at their table to decide on the following: Decorations (if any wanted). The Women's Club can supply decorations if you wish to use them or you can use your own. The hall is reserved on Wed, Nov 24 @ 4 pm for those wanting to decorate their tables. Place Settings (Does the table want to be uniform, or everyone bring their own?) Food and Drink. (What will be prepared and served at each individual table and who will bring what?) Table cleanup. (Each table will need to be cleaned when you are finished, by those sitting at that table.) We encourage you to signup 'now' to be a host and invite your friends and neighbors to share this most wonderful holiday together with you at your table. We would like to see all the tables full.
