The food shelves at SONshine ministries are empty right now. There are many people that depend on getting a little extra help just to make sure their families have enough food to eat each day. SONshine ministries was founded right here in SEPO and they impact a lot of lives by helping to meet these needs. They need our help to replenish their inventory so they can continue to care for people that are in need of food.
We will have a food drive on Halloween just before Karaoke. Please bring any donations that you have to the hall between 5:00 - 6:00. Bill Petersen will be at the hall with his pickup truck. Bring your donations to his truck. Our goal will be to fill his truck!
If you have donations and are not able to get to the hall at this time, please contact Bill directly.
If you have any questions you can contact Rich Hulswit.

Ok all you Elves! Next Wednesday is the Jefferson Elementary Christmas program at 9 am. The address is 601 S J St in Harlingen. I was told we can park right in front of the school (its yellow curbed but no problem). Try to carpool and arrive by 830 to set up.
I'm taking Geneva and all the stuff. Not sure if I have room for more. If anyone can drive (or needs a ride), reply to this email (which will come to me) so everyone that wants to attend, can come!!
Come dressed in any Christmas attire. Ho,ho,ho!!!

Jefferson Elementary Christmas Program Update!
Our first annual Jefferson Elementary Christmas Program will be happening Wednesday, December 10th at 9am. I visited this Harlingen school, meeting with my contact and he is thrilled that we plan on making this an annual thing. The backpacks are stuffed with shiny new things, the pillows are covered with fabulous cases, new caps on their heads will put smiles on their faces. Santa and Mrs. Claus will delight them with a toy for every girl and boy. Music will resound throughout their hall as we wish a Merry Christmas to them all! Thank you to all who gave of their time, talent and treasure to these children who are so in need!

Here is what "community" looks like. People coming together sharing their time, talent and treasure so that we can provide a special Christmas for children in the poorest school in Harlingen. Yesterday we filled backpacks full of supplies for 2nd graders at Jefferson Elementary, 20 baskets for 23 teachers(still need to make 3 more), new pillows with cute pillowcases made by Jan and her quilters, as well as toys from Santa.
We still have some purchases to make to complete everything, but we are well on our way! My heart felt thank you to all who donated in any way. We will be spreading Sunshine on that day!!
We will need a Santa and Mrs Claus. If interested, let me know. Our would be Santa will lend you his suit if you need one.

I have reserved the hall from 10-12 on Wednesday November 12th to fill backpacks and make teacher baskets. This way I'll know what else I need. If you'd like to help, please come! If you have any baskets you can part with, we need a total of 23 for assembling teacher baskets. Kleenex, wipes, markers, etc would all be welcome. All donations are welcome. I would like to make this an annual event, so any extra donations, including financial will carry over to next year. Thanks for your generosity! - Mary Hull, Event Chairperson

Newsletter 2025-10: DONATIONS NEEDED FOR SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM! -
This is a personal plea, not connected with Women's Club. I have been involved prior to coming here in doing a Christmas program for students at a school that has the neediest children in the area. Jefferson Elementary is that school in Harlingen. My goal is to have our Sunshine Resort bring "Sunshine" to 2nd graders (possibly 1st also depending on donations).
My plan is to have a program with Santa and Mrs. Claus, music, treats. etc. I ordered backpacks, pillows (many don't have their own), and hope to give them a doll or car/truck and school supplies. Audra is making them caps with their school colors. I have already received several financial donations toward covering costs and some school supplies as well. Some of you prefer to remain anonymous, which I will do. But that does not prevent me from sending out a great big THANK YOU to those who have already donated. Also, if you'd like to be there that day, the more the merrier. You won't regret it. And I can't forget the teachers. If you'd like to provide a basket for teachers (or supplies to put in them), Kleenex, wipes, markers, scissors, etc., please contact me. God bless you all for considering being involved in whatever way you can!

I sent the below SEPO email (dated 07-21-2025) to the community on Monday for Mary Hull. And today I saw additional info concerning this personal endeavor on the "SCC Estates Group" Facebook page. Knowing some or you aren't on Facebook, I have set up a page on the Sunshine Website under the EVENTS Tab in this page (Special (Winter 2025-2026)".
If Mary sends me anything she wants to have an email sent about, I will do that. Otherwise, if you aren't on FB (or even if you are), you can check on the Sunshine website (this page) for updates. Hope this helps out you non-Facebookers.

Facebook 2025-07-21: Backpack Donations -
I found a place where I can order backpacks for $5.30 each for Jefferson Elementary but I'd need to order 48 (total $255). If anyone wants to donate toward this purchase, it would be much appreciated. Thank you. - Mary Hull

Hi to all Sunshine residents! Hopefully most of you are back in your homes after repairs. You've all been in my prayers.
This is a reminder that I'm asking for donations to provide a special Christmas for second graders at Jefferson Elementary, the poorest school in Harlingen.
I'm asking for real barbie dolls and trucks/cars (nothing needing batteries), twin size pillows (our quilters are making pillowcases. Thank you ladies! ). Audra is making stocking caps in school colors..thank you so much!
There are about 30 second graders. If we get more than enough, we will do first grade as well. But I wasn't sure how successful our venture would be so thought I'd start small.
I'm trying to get a deal on backpacks so we can put crayons, pencils, rounded scissors, candy etc. We will gladly take financial donations to cover missing supplies. I will be back October 5. I have a special bank account specifically for donations. Pam Davis is my second in command so you can give her checks or cash prior to that.
This is not a Women's Club activity, but a Sunshine "adoption" as I'd like to make this an annual thing. Anyone willing to come the day of the celebration is welcome to help. We will need a Santa and Mrs Claus and someone to lead singing Christmas songs. I've been involved at another park and you will not regret it. These kids are so happy. Most don't have their own pillows which is why we are doing that. So please open your hearts and participate however you can.
You can always contact me for any information. Thank you in advance. God bless you!
P.S. it was suggested to do teacher baskets with things like Kleenex, markers and maybe a little something special just for the teachers.

Sent 2025-03-21: DONATIONS REQUEST: Christmas for Jefferson Elementary 2nd graders -
(From Facebook in March 2025)
This is a request to all residents of Sunshine country Club Estates. I am planning a special Christmas for Jefferson Elementary 2nd graders(and possibly 1st). This school is 99%economically disadvantaged. My plan with your help will be to provide them each with a backpack filled with pencils, crayons erasers, coloring books, a toy from Santa and Mrs Claus...Barbies for the girls and a truck or car for the boys, a pillow and pillowcase(cases being made thanks to the quilting group), small stuffed animals, treats, and music. Many of you have already left for up north, if you find good deals on any of these items and would like to contribute, I can guarantee these children will be appreciative. I've experienced it in Brownsville. If you would prefer to contribute with a financial donation that will be used to purchase missing items or possibly cover another classroom, you can deposit a check earmarked for Jefferson but made out to me, Mary Hull or Pam Davis in the library. I have set up a checking account for this purpose only! I also have containers in the library for those of you that are full timers and want to drop them off. I almost forgot. It was suggested we put together a basket for the teachers as well . So tissue, hand sanitizer, kids scissors etc all are welcome. Thank you in advance for considering donating. And I will be in need of Santa's helpers that day. You'll never regret it. Let's bring Sunshine to some needy children.
I will also post the above list of items requested in the library.
I hope this can become an annual event.
