Email guidelines are HERE . Doing this, along with it still being published on Facebook if you wish, will ensure all pertinent info gets to the community, particularly to those who don't use Facebook. The Sunshine Community 2024-2025 Winter Season (10-01-2024 thru 03-31-2024) is almost here. And I've volunteered to create your Sunshine Newsletter again this year. I made an executive decision last weekend. Since some of this winter season's activities start right off the bang near the beginning of October, I think sending the first reminder that the October 2024 Newsletter articles are due by end of day on the 24th of this month (September) is warranted. All articles need to be submitted to seponewsletter@gmail.com . And, if at all possible, please don't wait until you get the next reminder (later in September) to send me your articles. But, if you are waiting for as many details as possible to be finalized, I totally understand. This is a super way to get the word out about upcoming activities. Even if you don't have all of the information finalized by the Newsletter deadline, at least put 'what you do know so far' or even just a 'Save the Date' sentence in the Newsletter. Updated Newsletter Guidelines , dated Aug 1, 2024 , are posted on the website HERE . Prior Newsletters , which you can use as examples, can be found HERE . Let's fill this Newsletter with all kinds of good info for the Sunshine Community. Please contact me with any issues/questions. If you have a pic or some pics you would like me to consider, please email them to me at the email address below. And if I get several I'll just keep switching them out every few week. Karren Amos Sent 2022-04-18: All SEPO Communications during the Summer 2022 - The below is concerning SEPO Communications via e-mail and the Sunshine Web site during this summer 2022. I will be heading back up north this coming Friday, so I won't be able to pop over to view the 'white board' or walk around the library to see what is posted that I haven't been informed about. I always like to post Sunshine event posters, signup sheets/info etc on the Web site for all to see. And, of course, inform everyone via the SEPO e-mails, which is the best way to keep your 'entire' Sunshine community aware of what's going on. And, when your event is complete, please send any pictures you took to sunshinecountryclubweb@gmail.com so I can post them as well. Please keep in mind. one of the main purposes of the Web site is to promote our community as a super place to live. I know a lot of you found out about this great community by viewing the Web site. Therefore, I will be relying on both the Office and "all of you" to keep me informed of what activities and events are being planned and taking place over the summer. I am already hearing about some things in the works, but have not received anything to send to the community so that everyone knows about it. So lets promote, promote, promote. And as a final note - Don't forget to complete an 'Activity Request' form so that your event gets added to the Events Calendar by the Office. Please call with any questions. And to those of you whom I may not see prior to this Friday, have a super fun summer and I'll see you in the fall. Special shout out to Wade Prater and his band Whisky Dent who donated their talents and tips to the event. Upon completion, a short version will be available on this Web site. They are also hoping to have a showing of a longer version to all interested residents at Retzlaff Hall. Sunshine Video Committee Update (12-14-18): Good afternoon! It is so exciting how Sunshine committees and residents are always busy finding ways to enhance or improve our community! With that said, The Sunshine Video committee is in the beginning stages of working on Lassey Dahlstrom’s brain child - our very own community advertisement! You may notice at events or parties that one of our volunteer video persons may be recording. If for any reason you do not want to be in the video, please let the video person know and we will certainly respect your wishes! At our planned parties, i.e. Women’s Club events, there will be an announcement about the video(s) being taken, so you can let us know if it is indeed something you prefer not to participate in. Otherwise, please feel free to share your enthusiasm!! Irene Phillips, who you may have noticed is an avid photographer, has agreed to take care of many of the planned videos. We also have others on our committee who will be assisting. Your cooperation and enjoyment of the production will be greatly appreciated, and we will have such a wonderful memory video! We would also like to invite you to submit any videos or still pictures that you think are exceptionally fun or interesting! They do not have to be recent as long as they are of good quality and, of course, of Sunshine people and/or activities. For instance, we know the cameras were out in full force at the Leslie Blassing concert/dance. The Video Committee will be gathering these videos and pictures and will then get to work on splicing, editing, etc.! The committee plan is for the end production to contain snippets of different activities and fun we have here at Sunshine; perhaps 15 to 30 seconds of different events, along with some still pictures. Stayed tuned for an announcement of when and where you will be able to view this marvelous production. But don’t hold your breath on the announcement, because this may take a few months to create. Guys and Dolls committee - Sent from Deloris Pearcy Sent 2021-12-18: GOLF Event: Guys & Dolls - You will see on the various mediums that list this winter season's Sunshine activities, there is a spot slotted for the Guys & Dolls Golf Tournament & Banquet on Feb 19 & 20, 2022. But it also says "Need Chairpersons". These dates were requested last March by me, only in order for this event to get on the calendar. We haven't had it for the last two seasons, due to Covid-19. So, I know there are residents who really want to see it started up again. Although that seems like a long time off, if this event is going to take place this season, now is the time for residents to step and volunteer to chair it. If you have never chaired such an event there are several residents who have chaired this and other similar golf events. I'm assuming they would be more than happy to get you going and answer any questions you may have. I believe a committee of about six to eight people can put this on. If you are interested, please contact me and I will assist you with getting the paperwork going for this. I do not play golf, but I know the people who have played in this tournament in the past have enjoyed it immensely. Thanks for your consideration. However, the committee decided we would call it the Sunshine Country Club Estates Golf Tournament, rather than the Good Neighbor Golf Tournament, for this year only. The name change is because of input from the organizing committee and others. We will be limiting participation to only residents/renters of Sunshine and/or their immediate family. Additionally, the golfers must be 55 years of age or older. We plan to host everything outside, so we will not have an awards dinner on Saturday. Dale Hopfner & Sherri Gardner Casino Night Chairs (FROM 01-04-2019 E-NEWS): Casino Night - We are preparing for our 6th Annual Casino Night as well as "our" last. We have decided to step down as Casino night co-chairs. It has been an interesting and at times overwhelming experience. We feel we have it fine tuned now and it is a great fund raiser for the Women's Club. Therefore, it is our hope that someone else within our community would enjoy the challenge and continue this project and keep it going for the Women's Club! We feel that if it is dropped at this point, it would be difficult to reestablish, as well could end up with higher costs. So, we are hoping there are a few of you out there in our community, that would be willing to shadow us in our last year and see what it takes to operate. Now would be a great time to step up and learn the ropes! You are welcome to attend our next meeting on Tuesday and discuss any questions you may have or give either one of us a call if you are interested. Thank you Sherri Gardner & Dale Hopfner (Current Casino Night Co-chairs) (FROM 01-04-2019 E-NEWS): Our Casino night meeting which was scheduled for Monday, January 9th has been changed to Tuesday the 10th @ 11:00 am in the library. We would just like to thank everyone for their support of this event, not only this year but over the past 6 years! We never knew that Casino night would grow into such a popular event, but we are sure glad it did. Without the large number of volunteers it takes to run this event, our success would not have been possible. We are so grateful to all who have volunteered their time, effort and financial support to our Casino night. As well as to all of our Sponsors and all who attended our event and helped to make it one fun and exciting evening! Thank you as well to all who sing our praises, it is very much appreciated but humbling. Because it really does "take a village" and what a village we have here in Sunshine Estates. Please keep supporting the Women's Club events, as well as all the other events that make our community so fun and vibrant! See y'all around Sunshine and thanks again! Most sincerely Dale Hopfner & Sherri Gardner Past Casino night co-chairs *************** 03-14-19 ----- Thu ----- D ance/Fundraiser: Music by The Classics Band (Deb Robins & Tiffany Prater) COMPLETE (FROM FEB 2019 NEWSLETTER): The March Mystery Party was canceled for this year but a new event is being planned for the same night, March 14th. Ronald McDonald Wish List (From 03-09-2019 E-News): Hi All! This is a reminder that on this coming Thursday, March 14, 2019 the Women's Club will be putting on a dance/fundraiser donating to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Rio Grande Valley supports our community by providing a "home-away-from-home" for families of critically ill or injured children at local hospitals and clinics. We hope you plan to attend so that you can help them continue with the important work they do! A representative from this charity will also be in attendance. In order to supply them with items they need we are asking for everyone who attends this event to either give a $5 donation per person or bring an item from the wish list. Their Wish List is posted in the Library and can also be found on the Web site by clicking on the icon located here (www.sunshinecountryclub.com/activities-details ). ALSO - Bring along some extra money so that you have a chance to win one of the many prizes that have been donated and that will be given away/raffled off. Remember, this is all for a very good cause. The dance is being held in Retzlaff Hall from 7 PM to 10 PM . Music is being provided by the Classics Band (of which Wade Prater is a member). This is a BYOB and snack type of event . AND - You may think the committee isn't aware that this is the normal Thursday Pavilion Happy Hour event day. BUT - You would be mistaken. We'd very much like folks to come out before the dance and join in the fun of the Pavilion Happy Hour. You might even be able to snatch a sizzling hot dog or two off the grill. NOTE - This is no signup for this event. Just come and get your groove on and enjoy your neighbors and friends. This will be one of the last events (and definitely the last Womens' Club event) before most of us head north for the summer. Thanks in advance for your support. See you soon. - Tom Stone, President Birding and Nature Club Sent 2026-01-29: Birding & Nature Club - Info & Interest Survey - Birding & Nature Club – A legacy of positive impact for SEPO residents Early members played a significant role in making Texas Avenue what you see today. Previously, the swamp covered most of the current grassy areas where the dogs now walk. The club removed trees and other types of vegetation, brought in fill and worked to level the ground. Periodically, new trees and shrubs were planted, and identification plaques were installed. The original butterfly garden and fountain were installed. Berms and plantings were made behind the gazebo. Bird feeders were added and maintained. Last summer the metal mesh fence was installed to support vines. The goal of that area is to have native plants that continue to attract birds and butterflies. The club has held beginning birding classes, led bird walks in the community and around the RV “lakeside”. Field trips have gone to local birding hotspots. Bird books were donated to the library, and a community bird sighting list is maintained there. The club continues to host outside speakers. Some members have even participated in the annual Audubon Bird Count. To help keep the Birding & Nature club relevant to current SEPO residents, we would greatly appreciate it if you would take a couple of minutes to at least review the survey. Sent 2023-06-07: Gift Baskets for 2024 Good Neighbor Day Golf Tournament (GNDGT) - Good Neighbor Golf Tournament 2024 Thursday, February 29th through Saturday, March 2, 2024 Gift Baskets Hello Sunshine Estates friends: As you may recall, as part of our Good Neighbor Day Golf Tournament’s Awards Banquet we have provided unique prizes provided by our Residents. This letter is to help remind you, while you are “back home in the northlands" , to consider maintaining this tradition for our 2024 Tournament. We are soliciting your help in continuing to prepare “Gift Baskets” of items found locally in your area during your summer stay. We suggest selecting things that set your home area apart from others. These gift baskets will be awarded as prizes during our Awards Banquet. I am aware of several recipients in the past of these unique gift basket prizes, who have indicated how blessed they were to receive these baskets, and they genuinely appreciated Sunshine Residents’ generosity. In our 2023 Awards Banquet, one of the people who received a Gift Basket in the prior year donated a beautiful quilt made by his wife to pay it forward. For example, I most recently lived in Lafayette, Louisiana. So, I will put together a basket of “Cajun items”; seasoning, rice, Tabasco/hot sauces, Beignet mix, cookbooks, and locally brewed beer/wine for our gift basket. Just think of items your area is famous for and start accumulating them to bring back with you. We want the baskets in the $30-$50 value range. By preparing the baskets we are also providing a showcase for various products that are in North America where Sunshine Estate residents live during the summertime. I hope to see everyone in the Valley in a few months. Thanks for your support. Many residents lined up along the Parade Route showing their support, cheering us on, tossing candy and enjoying this seasonal festivity with family, friends and neighbors. A special Thanks goes to all the entrants as their time and talent plus endurance led to this successful event. Eleven challengers vied for the prestigious Women's Club award for "best decorated". Winners were 1st Place: Terry and Rich Debackere - 2nd Place: Heidi Dill and 3rd: Kathy Walker and granddaughter Jessica. Cathy Richmond with fearless Gizmo and Share Nelson with mischievous Maggie contributed to this pet-friendly part of the entourage and the McGruffmobile was proud to have his crime fighting four legged buddies as backup. Larry Lentz and his wife Linda, (son of Alice Montgomery), new resident, new volunteer for NW Patrols and recent Citizens Police Academy graduate drove his golf cart advertising our CERT Team. Lisa (new resident) was pressed into action 30 minutes before showtime as our Firefighters were battling a field fire until the last minute - possibly not able to show up to carry Santa. Several of Santa's helpers helped dismantle her beautiful Thunderbird convertible so Santa could be chauffeured. (The reindeer had a previous engagement). Sgt. Jaime Palafox volunteered to be our lead HPD Police Car supporting efforts of our Neighborhood Watch. Bob Saylor drove the NW Golf Cart (the McGruffmobile is named after the famous crime-fighting dog Mr. McGruff). So the phrase "It takes a Village,,,," puts it mildly when you think of how many Sunshine folks were involved and our neighbors - don't forget the Choraliers, the Christmas Tree Lighting, Hot Cocoa and cookies and Santa photo op. Guess you noticed the famous gate was wide open (like having our own International Peace talks.....). Hope you and your families have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy, happy New Year. Photos available c/o Karen & Lenore Encore will download my chip and we will have more photos too. If you have any to submit, let me know. -- Lenore J Combs 956 245 1276 (2019-12-01) From Dec Newsletter - The Annual Golf Cart Christmas parade will be on the evening of Dec 7th. We will be joining our neighbors at Encore RV Park. Lenore Combs is in charge of this event. 4:30 Line up – behind Friendship Hall – at Encore for judging etc. 5:00 pm Christmas Tree Lighting and start of Golf Cart Parade We welcome everyone. You are all cordially invited. Come one, come all – decorated cart or not. Just join in on the festivities and have fun. If you wish to not be in the parade – be a great spectator! Gather your buddies, grab a lawn chair and enjoy in the merriment. The Parade route (both Encore & Sunshine) will be posted in the Library. The improved route is under construction and is more inclusive as we shall devote more time to this per your request. Harlingen and Combes Police Department will lead out followed by Neighborhood Watch Captain and assorted Golf Carts. The Harlingen Fire Truck will bring Santa. End up at Encore Rec Hall for refreshments etc., photo op with Santa and awards. Sunshine Women’s Club provides 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place prizes for best decorated SCCE Golf carts as Encore will provide their three Prizes for their entries. Hope everyone had enough to eat! We do have some amazing cooks here. For the few who could not join us because of illness, we hope you are feeling much better. To all my helpers in bringing this together, Thank You all!!! You all made hosting this meal a great success. There was one casserole brought to dinner wrapped in a pretty white towel with embellishments. If this is yours, please call me at 7082808910. Thank you again, for spending the holiday with your friends and neighbors here at Sunshine😊. Sincerely, Cathy Chajec (2019-11-20) Thanksgiving - Dear Friends and Neighbors: Thanksgiving is a week from tomorrow. We would love to have you join us for our annual Thanksgiving dinner on the 28th. I need to have a count on who would like to attend by Monday at noon. I will need time to shop and plan table set ups. All are welcome, including family and friends from outside. The cost is $6 and includes white and dark meat turkey, ham, dressing, gravy and coffee, tea and water. You supply a dish to serve 12 that will enhance our meal. BYOB of course. This year, the turkey breast will be fresh and not processed. Last year we had some people who did not like the processed turkey. Sorry, it was an oversight by the committee. We try our best to make the holiday special for everyone attending. Social hour begins at 1 and dinner will be ready at 2 p.m. Please sign up before Monday if you care to join us. Sign up sheet and envelopes are in the library for your payment and space for what dish you will bring. The committee and I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what you choose to do. Any questions, please contact Cathy Chajec at 708-280-8910. Thank you (2019-11-12) THANKSGIVING DINNER - Dear residents - Thanksgiving sign-up sheets will go up on the easel in the library this afternoon. There will be a box with envelopes near the easel for your virtual tickets. Tickets will be $6 per person and checks can be made out to SCCE Women's club. Please place your money in the envelope, fill out the information on the front and drop it in the slot on the box. Please also make sure you fill out the sheet on the easel with your information and what you plan to bring to share. Your names will be added to a master list which we will check off at the door. Doors will open at 1 pm with dinner being served at 2. The menu will consist of the committee making the turkeys, ham, dressing and gravy. Your contributions will round out our meal. We always have plenty of food. The sign-up sheet will come down by noon on November 25th so we can plan the shopping we need to do. Visiting family and friends are always welcome. Please make sure to follow the above instructions so we know how much food to prepare. This also gives us a count for table settings. We are so blessed to be able to share thanksgiving with all our friends and neighbors who do not have family here. Please don't be alone on this special holiday. Come join your neighbors for this celebration, make new friends, and eat till you are stuffed! Any questions, please contact Cathy Chajec at 708-280-8910. (2019-11-09) Thanksgiving - We have a chairperson & Need Committee Volunteers - Dear Residents: I, Cathy Chajec, have volunteered to Chair the Thanksgiving Dinner on November 28, 2019. I am desperately looking for volunteers to help make this a wonderful holiday for all those who are staying in the Estates. With many helpers, it is an easy dinner to put on. There is a sign-up sheet in the library area where you can place your name and contact number if you choose to help out. I will be looking for turkey bakers, kitchen help preparing the dressing & gravy, turkey carvers, decorating help, and clean up. If I receive enough help with the preparations , I will post a sign up sheet in the library on November 14th. Cost will be $6 per person and a dish to pass. One person, a dish to feed 6; and couple, a dish for 12. Such items as mashed or sweet potatoes, green beans, corn carrots or other vegetables, cranberry relish, deviled eggs, or other relish tray, or pie/dessert. There will be a women's club box and envelopes to fill out and put your money in. These are considered virtual tickets and we will have a list made up so we know who and how many are coming. The menu will consist of Turkey, Ham, Dressing, and Gravy prepared by the committee. For any new residents, this is a good way to get your "feet wet" and see what it takes to be part of a crew to host a party. Everyone in the Estates is welcome, as well as those family and friends who might be visiting. It is a nice way to enjoy Thanksgiving as a community, without having to do all the cooking and cleaning involved in a home party. I hope you will consider helping in some way to make this event possible for all of our residents. Thank you for your consideration. Cathy Chajec, 708-280-8910 if you have any questions. (2019-11-07) Thanksgiving - Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we need co-chairs to head up this event. Grab a friend and sign up. This is a way that our residents can have Thanksgiving together as a Sunshine family when we are not celebrating with our individual families. If that is something that interests you, please contact me. Thank you! Our committee members worked hard to put this patriotic program together to remember the fallen and honor those who have served, are serving and their families. Thanks to: Heidi sang the National Anthem for the U.S. and for Canada. Helen recited “In Flanders Field Where Poppys Bloom”. Jean gave us highlights on the 75th Anniversary of Iwo Jima and the Battle of the Bulge. Caroline Clements related her brother’s story on his Battlefield Commission during the Battle of the Bulge. Also, Caroline provided Veterans patches for us. Sally and Lenore performed the Flag Folding Ceremony and Cathy Chajec read the script. Ron presented the Folded Flag for the Missing Man Table while John read the significance of the items on the table. The American Flag and the Canadian Flag were posted. Our Branch Flags were proudly carried by our Veterans and/or their families. Marian, Karen and Share helped with all facets including Pot Luck. Lenore Combs (2019-11-10) CHANGE OF PLAN - Veterans Day Tribute - There is a slight change of plan for the Veterans Day Tribute being held in Retzlaff Hall tomorrow (11-11). The program will be starting at 3:30 PM (instead of 3 PM). Social time will be at 4:30. Dinner will be at 5. Also, if you have a picture as or of a veteran you would like to post on the Bulletin Board during the ceremony & dinner, please bring it with you before the ceremony and we'll get it up there. Please spread the word about these changes as there are quite a few folks who still haven't provided an e-mail to Beth Parrish (e-mail admin) in order to start receiving the Sunshine E-mails. Questions - call Lenore Combs (2019-11-07) Veteran's Day - This Monday, November 11th there will be a Veteran’s Day Program in Retzlaff Hall at 3 pm. Vickie Jones Women's Club Activity Director (2019-11-07) WOMEN'S CLUB, Veteran's Day - We are hoping to have a Veterans Day program here at Sunshine on Monday 11 November 2019 with a Potluck to follow. There is a sign-up sheet for volunteers in the Library. This is usually a 2part deal – one Patriotic and the other a social Potluck. In the past John and I have assisted with the Flag Ceremony (Patriotic side) while Marian Young handles the Potluck side. We need Flag bearers and someone to talk on Veterans day. We can consider a Flag retirement ceremony outside or whatever you like. Also, included in the Opening will be a 2 minute of silence observed calling for all people to pause in honor of the service and sacrifice of our Veterans throughout the history of the Nation. We will also honor our Canadian Veterans. There will be sign-up sheet in the Lounge for a Flag Detail and for the Potluck. If anyone wants to say a few words about the day – step up. Honor our Veterans and their families. No support = no program but let’s hope for the best.
